1st GO SMART Online Forum Kicked off Conversation on Epidemic Prevention

Global Organization of Smart Cities (GO SMART), an international network of Smart Cities, has held the online workshop of “Smart Tech in Fighting COVID-19” via a video-conference approach on April 29th, 2020, attracting government-related units, industry and academic organizations from over 20 cities of various nations to attend virtually and talk freely about their epidemic prevention experience as well as solutions.

With the COVID-19 pandemic spreading globally, “technological epidemic prevention” has also become a popular topic for this epidemic outbreak. Being the international organization gathering the energy from global smart cities, GO SMART has joined hands with units including Asia Pacific ICT Alliance, Asia Silicon Valley Development Agency, Computex, InnoVEX and Startup Terrace, and has received support and responses from various nations’ offices in Taiwan, gathering energy from all sources to organize the international online workshop for the first time.

The representatives from eight cities and government units such as Taipei City, Darwin City from Australia, Economic Board Utrecht from Nertherlands, World Smart Sustainable Cities Organization (WeGO), Government of Canada in Seoul, Taoyuan City (Taiwan), New Taipei City (Taiwan) and German Trade Office Taipei were invited to share their experiences and policies towards fighting the pandemic, and nine vendors also shared their epidemic prevention-related solutions. Public and private departments from all over the world were able to start a conversation surmounting spatial restrictions and to share cross-domain research cases and technological epidemic prevention experiences.

Mr. Kuan-Ting Chen, the Vice Spokesperson of Taipei City Government conducted the opening to share the successful experience on epidemic prevention of Taipei: “Due to the collaboration between the central and local authorities, big data is applied for advanced preparation – accurate and rapid diagnostic test as well as instantly tracking people under quarantine with mobile phones, thereby allowing the people in Taiwan to still be able to work and go to school with normal operations. Moreover, Taipei City is also actively collaborating with industries to promote technological epidemic prevention while enhancing the epidemic prevention capacity.”

What is more, the team from Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) introduced the lightweight (600g) rapid diagnostic system (Nucleic Acid Molecule Detection System); ELECLEAN published the globally pioneering disinfectant spray machine that uses water as the raw material; Origin Wireless detects and tracks patients’ body conditions via precision breathing device, and Yallvend collaborated with Taiwan’s central authority and Taipei City Government to launch the ID-based mask vending machine…etc., where the attendees showed enormous praise towards the power of technological epidemic prevention.

The workshop lasted for 2 hours, with attendance from over 130 people during peak time; the overall tempo was tight but smooth, enriched with solid content.

GO SMART was established in March 2019 to provide the platform to promote knowledge exchange and to facilitate inter-city collaboration via PoC (Proof-of-Concept) projects, which will in turn accelerate urban innovation and speed up smart city development.
